Copenhagen Cycles Journey

Artist Eric Dyer’s Copenhagen Cycles Journey, a dizzying bicycle ride through an intricate reconstruction of the Danish capital, was shown on Times Square’s electronic billboards from 11:57 pm to midnight each night in July, 2015. This project was a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts.

Copenhagen Cycles Journey featured moving images of Copenhagen that swirled across the screen, establishing a dizzying pace as the viewer was led through a tour of the city in what felt like a pop-up book come to life. Dyer began the project during a Fulbright Fellowship, when he spent eight months exploring and videotaping Copenhagen from the seat of his bicycle. The artist selected sequential stills from the footage to construct several zoetrope-like cut-paper sculptures, capturing the rotation of the sculptures on high-definition video to create the final product.

“I am honored to bring this work to Times Square and New York- a metropolis of cultural collage, cyclic rebirth, and perpetual motion.” - Eric Dyer
